My New U-Part Wig = A Whole Weekend Doing My HAIR

"I have been so anxious about making this UPart but I needed to find an easy protective style to see me through the next two weeks before my relaxer touch up planned for 15 weeks post!"

On Friday night and Saturday morning I took out my kinky twists.  Whilst pre-pooing my hair, I set about making my U Part.

These are the steps I followed:

1.  I sealed the wefts of the Virgin Brazilian hair using Fray Check.  The last time I had this hair installed it shed like a mofo and I was not about to go through all that ish again so I ordered some Fray Check from a Ebay seller.  I lay the wefts on the dining room table whcih I had covered with a black bin liner and then applied the Fray check to the machined weft.  I only did  one side of the weft and in the end I only applied it to two of the three wefts I installed.

2.  Next I put my wig weaving net on the dummy head, pinned it with drawing pins (next time I will use my dressmakers pins as the drawing pins were too short and kept coming out which was annoying!) and then stitched all three bundles of hair (probably too much hair!) to the wig cap.

It was hard for me to tell if the cap would fit as my hair was all kinds of puffy as it was not detangled.  To me, the cap felt small.  I wrestled with whether I should use the weaving cap of the dome cap which I knew would fit but opted for the wig weaving net instead as I wanted to use it.  I figured if it went wrong I could always do it again using the dome cap.

This is the net that I used.

When sewing I folded over the wefts at the end of each track.  I did not cut them as cutting the wefts can encourage shedding.  Keeping them intact means that it is easy to reuse the wefts.  I also stitched around the weft, as stitching through the weft can also cause shedding.

4.  I don't know exactly how long the sewing took but I started around 5pm or 6pm and finished around 11.30pm.  I had a break or two in between sewing.  Next time it will be quicker.

The Back:  Finished U Part

I stitched all three of the bundles very close together.
When cutting off the net, I left about 1cm around it so that I had space to stitch it onto my anchor/perimeter braid.

3.  The next day following my kinky twist take down wash day, I prepped my hair for installing the U Part.  I was going to install some cornrows but I couldn't be bothered and honestly didn't think it was necessary.  Also, I wanted to give my hair a bit of a break after having 2 months of being braided so I opted for a perimeter/anchor braid and then put the rest of my hair into a ponytail.  My hair feels super soft and moisturised right now!

I can see from the pictures above that my hair has grown as my tiny ponytail is now longer!  Yaaay (",)  As you can see from the pictures I left leave out around the sides, to give them a break from the braids (I experienced some breakage in this area, even though I thought I was careful with the install and the upkeep of the Kinky Twsist) and also because I thought the cap was too small.  I also left quite a bit of leave out at the top of my head as I plan to do a centre parting with this style most of the time.

5.  I then stitched the wig cap to my head.  Low and behold the damn thing is too friggin big!!!!  I wasn't about to undo my braids so I just winged it but this means that the install is now a little bumpy on top.  I will probably take it down tomorrow and redo it but I just wanna keep my hands out of my hair for a day or two.

6.  I then flat ironed my leave out using my GHD's and then flat ironed the U Part using a paddle brush and my GHD's.  I used heat protectant on both the leave out and the U Part beforehand to protect both from the heat of the flat iron.

7.  I really like the U Part.  I think  I will love it  even more when I install it properly in a few days time.

The finished result.  However, on a separate note it appears my cheekbones are making a reappearance!  Hooray!!!!

I will be wearing my new protective style for the next few weeks until I am ready to do my relaxer touch up.  In the meantime I will be babying my leave out and only flat ironing once a week, I felt very naughty getting my flat iron out!
